Theo Jansen – Kinetic Sculptor

8 02 2009

Last night, a friend showed me Youtube videos of Theo Jansen’s kinetic sculptures.  They may be the most brilliant, original, zany, elegant, and beautifully designed inventions I have ever seen:

Theo Jansen explains his inventions.  “Better than a wheel”  — Sign me up.

What really blows me away is the simplicity and efficicency: there are no computer chips, or electricity of any kind. What Jansen calls the “brain” of the beasts are no more than pressurized soda bottles! Although Jansen uses PVC, these contraptions could have been invented using sticks and twine over the centuries. The ‘animals’ can store energy to start themselves, and can recognize and react to their surroundings and environment.  All without anything other than wind as an energy input.  Its the Theo Jansen types that makes me feel pretty ordinary.
